Warrior's Promise Foundation Supporting Dan Sperry
One of the many programs the Warrior's Promise Foundation offers is supporting Veterans in obtaining a service dog. We work directly with the Military Veteran, Companion Training in Boise, Id and the Veterans Administration to help these men and women who could greatly improve the quality of their lives with the use of a service dog. We are currently raising funds for Army Veteran Dan Sperry. Please read his story. If you would like to support Dan, click on the link to raise funds for Dan Sperry and Awescar.

More about Daniel
Daniel is a combat veteran who served in the Army as a cannon crewmember from 1988 to 1991. His service in Desert Shield and Desert Storm changed his life forever. Prior to combat, he was an outgoing man, who thrived in social situations and competed as a tri-athlete. After combat, he began experiencing chronic sudden headaches and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This combination has proven to be completely debilitating. In 2000, he had an accident during vocational rehabilitation sponsored by the Veteran’s Administration and has been unable to work since then. Because of his headaches and PTSD symptoms, it is extremely stressful to go anywhere by himself because of the possibility of having a headache that causes him to fall, or of having a panic attack in a public place.

As difficult as all of this has been for Daniel and his wife of 22 years, there is hope. Daniel has been matched with Awescar, a large labradoodle, who has been trained as a service dog. Awescar is large enough to be able to brace Daniel when a headache strikes and is learning to help Daniel to safety and to retrieve medication and water. Awescar is also being trained to help Daniel better cope with PTSD by accompanying him into stores, restaurants, buses, air planes and any other public places that he may need to go, as well as provide him with constant, supportive companionship.

The Department of Veterans Affairs Independent Living Program will pay for the training Daniel needs in order to fully utilize Awescar’s skills, but the VA program does not pay for the initial adoption costs for a trained service dog. Warriors Promise is raising funds to pay for Awescar and his training to date so that he can live with Daniel and restore some of the life he has lost through his disabilities.
